Three seasons were played outside India in full or in part. The 2009 edition moved to South Africa because of the Indian general election, the 2020 season was staged entirely in the UAE, and the 2021 season was suspended mid-way in India and completed in the UAE.

One clarification that trips up most lists: Sunrisers Hyderabad do not inherit the Deccan Chargers title. The BCCI terminated the Deccan Chargers contract in September 2012 and auctioned a fresh Hyderabad franchise, won by Sun TV Network in October 2012. They are separate entries with one title each.

The suspension that reshaped 2016 and 2017

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals did not play in 2016 or 2017. In July 2015 a Supreme Court-appointed committee suspended their owning companies, India Cements and Jaipur IPL, for two years following a corruption investigation, and both franchises served the full term before returning in 2018.

The BCCI filled the gap with two temporary franchises on two-year terms: Rising Pune Supergiants, renamed Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017, and Gujarat Lions. Neither won a title, but Pune came within a run of it, losing the 2017 final to Mumbai Indians. Gujarat Lions topped the 2016 league table with nine wins from 14 matches before losing both qualifiers, then finished seventh in 2017. Both were wound up when Chennai and Rajasthan returned, and Chennai won the 2018 title in their first season back.

Which teams have never won the IPL?

Three current franchises are still waiting. Delhi Capitals reached their only final in 2020 and lost to Mumbai. Punjab Kings have lost twice, as Kings XI Punjab in 2014 and under their current name in 2025. Lucknow Super Giants, who joined with Gujarat Titans in 2022, have reached the playoffs without making a final.

Among the defunct sides, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala never reached a final, and neither did Gujarat Lions. Rising Pune Supergiant came closest of any short-lived franchise, losing the 2017 decider by a single run.

What the finals tell you

Nineteen finals have produced five margins of eight runs or fewer, two of them decided by a single run and both won by Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad. Ahmedabad has hosted four finals since 2022, more than any other venue in that span.
